bare anvender de nye teknologier som en magnet i sig selv. ”It’s the message, not the media” lød svaret,
da jeg lagde spørgsmålet ud til åben debat på museernes debatforum  Dette
speciales problemfelt er netop at undersøge fænomenerne omkring museumsinstitutionen, før jeg
giver nogle konkrete løsningsforslag til, hvordan museerne kan benytte IT til at understøtte og udvikle
deres kommunikation og deres formidling af viden til brugerne. Det er dog væsentligt at understrege,
at teknologideterminismen også har stor betydning for de problemstillinger, som museerne står over
for i dag. I mange tilfælde er det ikke bare de nye digitale muligheder men selve den kultur, der er
opstået omkring teknologierne, som vil få direkte indflydelse på, hvordan museerne kommunikerer og
skaber oplevelser i fremtiden – og det gælder ikke kun for deres hjemmesider, men også for det fysiske
museum. Jeg har derfor valgt at anvende betegnelsen det informationsteknologiske samfund, idet den
betoner begge de fænomener, teknologiske som samfundsmæssige, som vil komme til at få betydning

for museerne nu og i fremtiden. Jeg ønsker altså ikke at lægge mig direkte op af ét iagttagelsesperspek-
tiv, men vil i stedet se bredt på både teknologideterminismen og samfundsudviklingen – uanset hvil-
ken der så betinger den anden – men med en kommunikationsteoretisk vinkel og et anvendelsesorien-
teret fokus for øje.

Den globale digitalisering har fundamentalt ændret ved samfundets kommunikationsformer og orga-
nisationsformer – som den spanske sociolog og samfundsanalytiker Manuel Castells udtrykker det, er

vi trådt ind i et nyt kommunikationsunivers: Internet-galaksen. Udviklingen af World Wide Web har
gjort det muligt for internettet at omslutte verden i almindelighed og dermed er internettet blevet det
kommunikationsmiddel, der for første gang gør det muligt for stort set hele verdens befolkning at

kommunikere med hinanden på ethvert tidspunkt og fra ethvert sted (Castells, M. 2003, p.21). I mod-
sætning til Qvortrup tager Castells udgangspunkt i teknologideterminismen og hævder, at det er revo-
lutionen inden for informations- og kommunikationsteknologierne, der har medført det nye paradig-
me, som vi befinder os i, hvilket Castells betegner ”Informationalism” (informationsalderen) (Op.cit.

p.15). På basis af det nye teknologiske paradigme er der opstået en ny organisationsform, en ny social
morfologi, der forbinder os gennem decentrale horisontale netværk, hvorfor Castells betegner vores
samfund som netværkssamfundet. Dette samfunds logik bygger på værdien af at dele – at alle kulturer
kan komplementere og lære af hinanden ved at give og modtage og samarbejde gennem en evig proces
af informationsproduktion og kommunikation (Ibid.). Don Tapscott og Anthony Williams forsøger i
bestselleren Wikinomics fra 2006 at formulere en økonomisk teori, som netop bygger på samfundets
