2.0 i museumssammenhæng. Der er ingen tvivl om, at Web 2.0 vil få betydning for museernes
identitet og rolle i samfundet, idet brugernes identitet og krav til museerne er ved at ændre sig.
Jeg vil derfor i det følgende sætte Web 2.0 under lup og redegøre for de mest centrale aspekter,
før jeg igen vender opmærksomheden mod museerne.
2.2 ”WEB 2.0”
Der findes flere betegnelser, der forsøger at karakterisere webbets anden generation – The Living Web,
The Hypernet, The Social Web, The Open Web, The Active Web, The Read/Write Web – men betydningen

er den samme og ”Web 2.0” er med ca. 341.000.000 søgeresultater på Google blevet den mest benytte-
de. Tim O’Reilly, grundlægger af forlaget O’Reillly Media, sættes ofte som ophavsmand til betegnelsen,

idet han på en konference i 2004 anvendte betegnelsen Web 2.0 i en diskussion af, hvordan webbet
efter årtusindeskiftet har ændret karakter.7 O’Reilly pegede på nogle centrale tendenser, der kunne
karakterisere webbets nye form. Eksempelvis er nøgleprincippet ved Web 2.0 ifølge O’Reilly ”The Web
as a platform”; i et mere teknologisk perspektiv rummer udsagnet det faktum, at webbet i Web 2.0-
kontekst ofte fungerer som ”platform” for i nogle tilfælde ret avancerede forbrugerapplikationer. I
stedet for at afvikle et tekstbehandlingsprogram som et egentligt program på en egentlig computer,
kan man med eksempelvis Google Documents8 afvikle samme funktionalitet direkte i en browser på

enhver computer eller på enhver håndholdt enhed via det mobile internet. Et andet væsentligt karak-
teristikum ved Web 2.0, som O’Reilly pegede på, er princippet ”Harnessing the Collective Intelligence”.

Princippet bygger på at udnytte den kollektive intelligens gennem åbenhed og samarbejde – som for

eksempel når tusinder frivilligt tilføjer artikler til Wikipedia og dermed er med til at opdatere, vedlige-
holde og udbygge encyklopædien i alles interesse, hvilket også kan beskrives med begrebet peer pro-
duction, hvilket betyder, at forskellige individer sammen skaber et fælles produkt. Den underlæggende

filosofi er baseret på James Surowieckis bog The Wisdom of Crowds – Why the many are smarter than
the few, hvori forfatteren argumenterer for, at en stor forsamling (en ‘crowd’) vil træffe bedre (forstået
som ”mere rigtige eller passende”) beslutninger end eksperterne blandt dem. Udtrykket Wisdom of
Crowds er næsten blevet synonym med Web 2.0, fordi websites og services ofte tager afsæt i brugernes

kollektive input og adfærd – eksempelvis som Googles page-ranking, der rent uafhængigt og kvantita-
tivt ranker de sites, der oftest linkes til som de mest relevante og informative. Et andet eksempel på

det er begrebet viral markedsføring, der i høj grad gør brug af Web 2.0 services; det bygger på samme

fænomen, nemlig det, at brugere anbefaler hinanden noget via ’mund-til-mund-kommunikation’ gen-
nem eksempelvis blogs, websites og sociale medier.
